Earthplane: Term used to describe the material planet on which we live.Ectoplasm: Watery vapour substance produced by the medium during a physical seance or demonstration. Thought to be the same substance issued from Jesus during the Transfiguration on the mountain. It is also recorded by Emmanuel Swedenborg, a great and early pioneer of modern Spiritualism. He called it ideoplasm because 'it immediately took on the face of a loved one the instance I thought of them!' Rarely seen today. It is thought to be made up of body tissue, water, fibres of clothing from the sitters and other particulates. It also has luminescent properties. Although there has been a lot of fakery concerning its production, the enquirer must not let that fact overshadow what is a very real and dominant phenomena. It is produced by 'Spirit Scientists'/Operators on the Other Side.
Ego: Enemy of spiritual progress. There is nothing wrong with ego, for without ego we would never leave the house let alone carry on with a normal conversation. It is when the ego is in control of you and not you controlling the ego that things go wrong.
Elemental: Nature spirits.
Elongation: A rare and peculiar phenomenon of physical mediumship in which the body of the medium seems to grow in stature. Scottish medium, Ecsomatic State: Daniel Douglas Home demonstrated this on numerous occasions.
El's Now almost forgotten about. The "El's" were a super race of beings who inhabited the earth in antiquity. They mastered space and time through the principle of elevation by 90 degrees. Many UFOs demonstrate the same capability. The El's, the Atlanteans and the inhabitants of the UFOs are - in some quarters - thought to be one and the same. UFOs fly effortlessly along the horizon and then make a sharp 90 degree upward deviation at incredible speed. This demonstrates their mastery of inter dimensional travel by use of Light. The lexicography of the letter 'L' is an echo of their memory. Their name has found its way into our everyday language. For example, you only have to look in the dictionary at all the words that start with 'L', 'il' or 'el' which have direct meaning towards sudden removal, taking away or light... alleviate, illuminate, elves, elfs, eliminate, electricity, ele, and so on. Try reading 'Secrets of the Andes', now long out of print, I think?
Energy: Inexhaustible. As Spiritualists we see everything as having energy.
Entity: Individual discarnate personality.
Equinox: That time of year when day and night are of equal length.
Esoteric: Hidden. A secret way of describing that which only adepts and initiates may understand. A way of communication.
Ecsomatic State: Out of Body Experience.
Ether/Etheric: The space between the atoms. Etheric Plane refers to the astral or 1st plane. It is where we 'Meet in sleep states, the ones we hold dear'. Old fashioned term for Spirit.
Eucharist: Christian sacrament commemorating Christ's Last Supper; consecrated elements of bread and wine.
Evangelical: According to gospel teaching. The doctrine of salvation by faith.
Evidence: That which is offered by the medium as proof of survival after the death of the physical body.
Evil: Wrong doing. A force that exists only in the human world. For instance, animals are not evil. Opposite of good. Evil is a state of mind ~ a level of consciousness.
EVP ~ Electronic Voice Phenomena: Particularly strong in the USA where there are many enthusiasts. Simply put, it is the phenomena of voices which appear as background 'noise' on magnetic tape recordings. Sitters will sit with a machine and ask questions with a view to receiving a reply. Although a lot of the evidence put forward is questionable and at best, vague, nonetheless there also exists compelling evidence to the contrary that these sounds are in fact the discarnate voices of people passed over to the Other Side of Life. Much, however, depends on the acoustic interpretation of the listener.
Exorcism: Expel evil spirits/entities by use of prayers and religious rites. Associated almost exclusively with Catholicism. As Spiritualists we recognise that there are disturbing cases where an entity has control over an individual. These cases are extremely rare and are surrounded by much physical phenomena. Most cases referred to Spiritualists as 'possession cases' could more accurately be described as 'obsession cases'.
Existentialism: Jean-Paul Sartre (b. 1905). Massive and intriguing subject for the Spiritualist. Psychology/philosophy. "I exist, therefore I am." We need not deny our own freedoms. For example, if I wish to run down the street naked then I will. What's stopping me? Convention! A philosophy which challenges the idea that we look immediately at why we should not do something rather than why we should.
Exodus: Second book of the Old Testament. Author, Moses. Central thought of this book is 'Deliverance'. Four periods in the history of Israel.
The latter refers to Moses' Law. The moral code by which people should live in the name of the creator.The period of bondage

The period of legislation and organisationExponent: Sometimes used in the UK to describe a medium who demonstrates their clairvoyance in a Spiritualist Church/Centre.
Extra: To do with physical mediumship and its effects of photographic plates. The face of a discarnate spirit/loved one appears on the developed photograph. Some are very clear, some are vague. It is the photographer and not the photographee who have this particular gift. They will have taken many photographs through the years where these 'extras' appear/impinge.
This picture, published in 1959, is said to have been made during
a visit by the photographer to his mother's grave. Yet upon development
the photograph seemed to show her sitting on the back seat of the car!Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP): Telepathy. Often used in a derogatory sense to explain away mediumship.
Ezekiel: Old Testament prophet. Thought to have had the first ever recorded encounter with an extra terrestrial space ship and its occupant [angel]. Read; Ezekiel: chapter one.
